Pilates

PILATES (pih-lah-teez) refers to a method of total body conditioning involving specific exercises developed by Joseph Pilates, performed on a mat (mat based Pilates). The emphasis is on the support and strengthening of what is referred to as the "Power house" - abdomen, buttocks, thighs and lower back. Intense engagement of the muscles in this area produces the dramatic results in posture and body shape that Pilates is famous for. A Pilates workout is engaging, stimulating and fun and is a well-designed program to get your body stronger and more integrated. People leave their sessions feeling relaxed, refreshed, and invigorated. It also functions equally well as a rehabilitation program. Chronic pain or weakness often diminishes or completely vanishes.

Pilates is accessible to anyone: young and old, athletic, sedentary or in physical therapy. It is for individuals who want to improve their strength and flexibility without building bulk. People who consistently use the Pilates method find their bodies become lithe, toned and supple.

Some of the benefits of the Pilates method

  • longer, leaner muscles (less bulk, more freedom of movement)
  • improve postural problems
  • increase core strength/stability and peripheral mobility
  • help prevent injury
  • enhance functional fitness, ease of movement
  • balance strength & flexibility
  • heighten body awareness
  • no-impact - easy on the joints
  • complement other methods of exercise
  • improve performance in sports (golf, skiing, skating, dance, etc.)
  • improve balance, co-ordination & circulation
  • release stress

Rose-Marie's Pilates classes

Having worked a number of years with Pilates based classes and many other forms of exercise I have developed my own unique style of Pilates in which I use a small soft ball, impregnated with aromatherapy oils, called the 'Chi Ball' (supplied for all class participants). This is used in some of the exercises and as a relaxation tool. I also incorporate some yoga exercises and exercises from the Feldenkrais method (very beneficial for a stiff and tired back and neck). There is also a relaxation at the end of the class.

All my Pilates classes are suitable for both complete beginners and more experienced exercisers, but are not suitable for pregnant women. Both men and women are very welcome. There will be an induction for all newcomers to Pilates, before the first class. Please telephone or email us for the next induction date.

If you have any neck or shoulder problems, please bring a hand towel with you to use as a support. You need a yoga/pilates/exercise mat (I have mats for sale at £18) and also a blanket or warm top for the relaxation. Please do not eat a large meal just before class.
