The World Health Organisation defines health as:
‘’A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being,
not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’’
This definition presents a very wide and positive range of different aspects of health that goes well beyond simply the absence of obvious sickness or disease which, by default, is often mistakenly assumed to equate to a state of good health and yet more careful observation shows that the ‘vertically ill’ make up a very large percentage of the population!
Clearly, prevention is better than cure, a lot less painful, and considerably more cost-effective, not only for the individual but for society as a whole. Scientists around the world are now advising governments that dietary and lifestyle factors are largely responsible for the alarming rise in many serious health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, etc.
Natural medicine utilises a holistic approach that focuses on the promotion and development of good health, rather than simply the eradication of a symptom or dis-ease, and is based on fundamental and time-honoured principles utilising non-toxic, natural therapies which respect the healing power of nature.
Clinical nutrition, or nutritional therapy, i.e. the use of diet and nutrition as a fundamental therapeutic tool, serves as the foundation of modern-day natural medicine. This is due to the fact that there is now an enormous body of scientific evidence that supports the use of whole-food nutrition and nutritional supplements both in the maintenance and promotion of good health and in the treatment of disease.
It is often said that ‘You are what you eat’ but a more insightful and accurate definition might be ‘You are what you eat, absorb and utilize at a cellular level’! There are many reasons for poor nutrition where it matters - in the cells of the body. These include poor or imbalanced dietary choices, over-processed food, inappropriate eating practices, nutrient deficient soils, long term food storage and the overheating and cooking of foods which may all contribute to deficiencies or imbalance. Poor digestion and elimination are also commonplace. Many of the top selling drugs in recent times have been those which are taken to treat digestive disorders! Do you think it strange that the human race is so afflicted with digestive problems and disease of the gastrointestinal tract? Other factors such as high stress levels, pollution, medicinal drugs, smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol, coffee, tea, sugar and phytates can also either increase the need for certain nutrients, upset the correct balance between nutrients, or interfere with their bio-availability, utilisation and retention.
All of these are important factors to consider and some of the conditions that we have been able to improve or eliminate utilizing a Natural Medicine approach include:
Fatigue, headaches, migraines, hay fever, asthma, eczema, psoriasis, food allergies & sensitivities, recurrent colds, low immune function, candidiasis, digestive problems, IBS, crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, hormonal imbalance, infertility, menopausal problems, PMS, arthritis, osteoporosis, depression, weight control, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, blood sugar imbalance ……… and many other conditions.
However, as mentioned above, it should be noted that our approach is predominantly non-specific, i.e. we do not ‘focus’ our attention solely on the particular health concern or disease. Working from the ground up utilizing key essentials to build good health provides the basis and opportunity for natural healing to take place. Fine-tuning utilising more specific remedial measures if necessary may then be utilised which is a far more effective approach than the more common ‘pill for an ill’.
